You can never know for certain when another driver is going to cause a car accident. However, you can always drive defensively to help reduce the risk. By keeping some important safety tips in mind, you can do your part in helping everyone get to their destinations safely.
Five quick safety tips that every driver should know are:
- Obey the posted speed limit: Obeying the posted speed limit is essential in helping to reduce the risk of accidents. Speed limit signs are not just arbitrary numbers — they are carefully calculated based on different factors including the type and number of lanes on a road, expected traffic conditions, and usual weather conditions for the area. Motorists who fail to abide by these speed limits inherently increase their chances of being involved in a crash.
- Leave plenty of space between cars: Leaving plenty of space between your vehicle and other cars on the road is an important safety measure that can help reduce the risk of accidents. Tailgating or following too closely massively increases the risk of a rear-end collision. You should try to maintain at least a 3-second gap between the back bumper of the vehicle in front of you and the front bumper of your vehicle. Remember to stay in the center of your lane, too, so you don’t risk a sideswipe accident.
- Avoid distractions: Distracted driving is one of the primary causes of motor vehicle accidents. Anything that takes a driver’s attention away from the task at hand — such as texting, eating, drinking, adjusting the music or GPS, and talking with passengers — can distract drivers and increase their chances of getting involved in an accident.
- Watch for traffic changes ahead: Trying to anticipate upcoming changes on the road is important for keeping yourself and other drivers safe. Monitoring the movement of traffic ahead can help you to take appropriate action, such as stopping or changing lanes when necessary. It’s also important to look out for sudden hazards that may appear in front of you, such as a car driving too quickly, animals crossing the road, or potholes. Typically, you should try to scan the road at least 10 seconds ahead of where you are currently.
- Always use turn signals: Using turn signals when turning or changing lanes is an important safety measure that helps ensure the safety of drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Turn signals inform other vehicles of your intentions, alerting them of your movements, and giving them time to react accordingly. By using your turn signals, you are providing an extra layer of protection and helping to keep the roads safe for everyone.

What If You Were Partially at Fault for the Bicycle Accident?
Just as motorists are required to obey the rules of the road, bicyclists also have a duty to follow the law. Bicycle laws vary from state to state, as well as from municipality to municipality, but they generally dictate how cyclists should share the road with vehicles, where they can and cannot ride, and safety equipment they are required to use. When cyclists do not obey these laws, they may be considered partially (or wholly) liable for an accident.
So, what happens if the driver, the driver’s insurance company, or the jury says you were partially to blame for the accident?
Most states—including Florida and Georgia—follow what are known as comparative fault rules. Under a comparative fault system, an injured party is not barred from seeking recovery if they were partially at fault for the injury-causing accident or event. However, your percentage of fault (as determined by the jury) will play a role in your recovery.
Because Florida follows a pure comparative negligence rule, you are permitted to seek compensation for your damages as long as the other party was at least 1% to blame. In Georgia, however, modified comparative negligence rules prohibit you from recovering compensation if you are determined to be 50% or more at fault for the accident. In both cases, your total recovery will be reduced by your at-fault percentage. For example, if a jury decides that you were 20% at fault for the accident because you acted negligently in some way, you will only be able to recover up to 80% of the total amount you would otherwise receive.
