At about 8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 26th, 2021, a hit-and-run accident occurred on J. Turner Butler Boulevard. The hit-and-run driver reportedly slammed into another motorist near the Hodges Boulevard intersection, which is a few miles southeast of Jacksonville city center.

Florida Highway Patrol has announced that the driver who remained at the scene was seriously injured in the accident. It is believed that they were transported to the nearby Mayo Clinic, but the exact hospital that is treating them was not stated.

Authorities are still looking for the driver who committed the hit-and-run. Anyone with important information about the identity of the hit-and-run driver is encouraged to call the Jacksonville Police Department at 541-899-7100.

Hit-and-run accidents are common across Florida due to the high rate of drivers without valid auto insurance. Some highway safety groups estimate that more than 12% of all Florida drivers are uninsured. Dishonest motorists are tempted to flee the scene of bad accidents, even though Florida uses personal injury protection (PIP) insurance to discourage hit-and-runs.

Severely injured motorists can sue other drivers and use PIP insurance if they are catastrophically injured in a crash.
